WP1 - NORTH SEA FAN-VØRING

Geoseismic panels 1–3

Three annotated seismic-reflection profiles comprise geoseismic panel 1, panel 2 and panel 3 from the North Sea Fan–Vøring region. The relative locations of these panels are shown on the map opposite. Collectively, these panels illustrate the contrast in style of sedimentation between the Kai and Naust formations, as well as the variability within the Naust Formation. The map also shows the location of profiles in Fig. 8, which together with these panels provide an overview of the seismic-stratigraphic expression of the Neogene succession in this region.

Geoseismic panel 1 and panel 2 represent segments of multichannel seismic data that illustrate the Cenozoic section in the southern part of the area, extending from the outer Møre Shelf into the deep-water North Sea Fan–Storegga Slide complex. These panels clearly show the contrast in depositional styles between the deep-water, bottom-current influenced Kai Formation and the shelf-margin, prograding wedge of the Naust Formation. The disposition of the latter unit is further complicated by mass-wasting processes associated with the Storegga Slide Complex.

Geoseismic panel 3 is a high-resolution seismic profile from the Vøring Plateau. In contrast to panel 1 and panel 2, the Neogene succession on the plateau is relatively undisturbed. The Naust Formation deposits here represent the distal part of the shelf-margin prograding wedge that characterises the mid-Norwegian continental margin.

More specific details of the Neogene succession highlighted by these seismic profiles are presented separately with each panel.
