The Neogene stratigraphy of the glaciated European margin from Lofoten to Porcupine |
LOWER PLIOCENE TO HOLOCENEThis section presents a summary of the megasequences that comprise the lower Pliocene to Holocene succession on the Atlantic margin of NW Europe. These stratigraphic units consist of the Naust Formation (Fig. 21), FSN-1 Megasequence (Fig. 22) and RPa Megasequence (Fig. 23). The definition of the stratigraphic terms together with a listing of the key boreholes and well sections used in this study is presented below. All depths are below sea bed. Other sample sites that have previously been used for descriptive purposes to this part of the stratigraphic section are also indicated below should the reader require further specific lithostratigraphic information. Naust Formation Name: Defined by Dalland et al. (1988), the name represents the Norwegian word for a boathouse. Key borehole/well sections:
ODP 642: 0–65.7m NB: well 6507/12-1 was previously quoted by Dalland et al. (1988) as the well type section. FSN-1 Megasequence Name: Named by GEUS and BGS. The upper-case notation (FSN) stands for Faroe–Shetland Neogene; the number (1) represents the specific megasequence. Key borehole/well sections: 214/4-1: 0–300m NB: well 208/15-1A and BGS boreholes 77/7, 82/10, 84/4 and 85/1 were utilised by Stoker (1999) to describe this section, which was previously assigned to the Middle and Upper Nordland units on the West Shetland margin. RPa Megasequence Name: Named by BGS, UCD and Royal NIOZ. The upper-case notation (RP) stands for Rockall–Porcupine; the lower-case letter (a) represents the specific megasequence. Key borehole/well sections: ODP 981: 0–271m _________________ Dalland, A., Worsley, D. & Ofstad, K. 1988.
